Southcrest Trails Neighborhood Park opens this month

February 9, 2018

Civic San Diego (CivicSD) is proud to announce the grand opening of Southcrest Trails Neighborhood Park, a 2.6-acre open space in the community of southeast San Diego that will benefit from the new activation and amenities that have been constructed in the formerly passive park setting.

The park’s grand opening will be Friday, Feb. 16, from 1 to 2 p.m. at the corner of Beta and Birch streets.

The new park features security lighting, children’s play areas, exercise trails with exercise stations, gazebos, picnic areas with barbecues and game tables, drinking fountains, a basketball court, a skate park and an amphitheater.

“This park will provide residents a beautiful and safe place to enjoy with their families and neighbors,” said Reese A. Jarrett, president of CivicSD. “This really gets to heart of our mission to improve the quality of life in San Diego’s most underserved communities.”

Drought-tolerant native plants were used for landscaping—and because the park sits near the Chollas Creek corridor, special attention was given to stormwater runoff and irrigation efficiency. Locally created public art was also integrated throughout the park in collaboration the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.

“Southcrest Trails Park is truly a reflection of the community it will serve and we can’t wait to share it with the residents,” Jarrett said. “We encourage everyone to come see what the park has to offer.”

The approximate $3 million project was funded with a State of California Urban Greening Grant and Southcrest Redevelopment Tax Increment Bond Funds.

Southcrest Trails Neighborhood Park is located east of Interstate 15 and north of I-5. For more information about the new park or its grand opening, please contact Daniel Kay at kay@civicsd.com.
