CIVIC SAN DIEGO PROJECT NAMED PROJECT OF THE YEAR AT ANNUAL RUBY AWARDS
.

SAN DIEGO – June 7, 2016 – Last week, the San Diego Housing Federation honored Celadon at 9th & Broadway as the 2016 Project of the Year at the annual Ruby Awards for the positive contributions it has made to the lives of its residents and the surrounding community.

The Ruby Awards recognize excellence in affordable housing and community development, highlighting the accomplishments of people, agencies and projects that work to ensure all San Diegans, regardless of income, have a safe, stable place they can call home. Named for the ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz movie, the Ruby Awards honor the notion that there really is “no place like home.”

Councilmember Todd Gloria presented the 2016 Project of the Year award to Celadon, a 17-story transit-oriented development located in the East Village neighborhood of downtown San Diego. Developed by BRIDGE Housing Corporation, Celadon includes 250 affordable rental apartments with ground floor retail and services for a multigenerational population. Civic San Diego provided a $21.8 million loan to finance the project.

“As the city’s entrepreneurial partner, Civic San Diego is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life and livability of San Diego’s urban communities and bridging the gap between public and private initiatives,” said Reese A. Jarrett, President of Civic San Diego. “The creation of quality affordable housing continues to be a strong focus of these efforts. We are proud to support the development of projects like Celadon that make a difference for both their residents and the surrounding community.”

Celadon is a transformative project for the healthy growth of downtown San Diego, satisfying the goal of developing a cohesive urban community by offering housing to seniors, the adult workforce and at-risk youth transitioning from a foster care childhood to adulthood. Residents have access to a community room, supportive services office, laundry facilities and numerous outdoor spaces, including a resident garden. Celadon is LEED Gold certified and a model of sustainable design in an urban setting, incorporating features such as an eco-roof garden with drought tolerant planting, sustainable landscaping and open spaces. It also includes the tallest vertical solar system of its kind in the U.S., rising 143 feet on the south side of the building. This modern solar aesthetic also serves as a functional shaded area for residents enjoying the property’s outdoor open space.

Celadon is a public-private partnership involving BRIDGE Housing Corporation, the City of San Diego, Civic San Diego, the San Diego Housing Commission, the State of California Housing and Community Development, and the County of San Diego. Each of these partners worked together to develop this outstanding affordable housing transit-oriented development in downtown San Diego.
