CIVIC SAN DIEGO CELEBRATES PROMISE ZONE DESIGNATION
.

SAN DIEGO – June 7, 2016 – Reese A. Jarrett, President of Civic San Diego, made the following statement regarding the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s announcement that San Diego has received a Promise Zone designation:

“As one of the partners responsible for implementing the Promise Zone, Civic San Diego looks forward to having an additional asset to improve the quality of life in some of San Diego’s most vulnerable neighborhoods,” said Jarrett. “We are excited about this new partnership between the federal, state and local agencies which will provide vital resources and tools to transform our urban neighborhoods. We appreciate the Obama administration’s recognition of our local commitment and the support of Mayor Faulconer, the City Council and our Board of Directors in accomplishing this meaningful designation.”

The San Diego Promise Zone comprises three of the City’s most economically disadvantaged neighborhoods, roughly bounded by the San Diego Unified Port District to the west; downtown San Diego and State Route 94 to the north; National City to the south; and the City of Lemon Grove to the east. The Zone is characterized by high unemployment, low educational attainment, insufficient access to healthy foods, concentrated poverty, rising crime, high rates of youth unemployment, and the least affordable housing in the nation. All Promise Zones receive priority access to federal investments that further their strategic plans, federal staff on the ground to help them implement their goals, and five full-time AmeriCorps VISTA members to recruit and manage volunteers and strengthen the capacity of the Promise Zone initiatives.
