CIVIC SAN DIEGO AWARDED MORE THAN $600K FOR SOUTHCREST TRAILS PARK

IN SOUTHEAST SAN DIEGO NEIGHBORHOOD

Proposition 84 Bond Fills Funding Gap for 2.3-acre Urban Park

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Civic San Diego announced today that it has received more than $600,000 in an urban greening grant from the California Strategic Growth Council (SGC) to complete the Southcrest Trails Park in the Southeast San Diego communities of Southcrest and Shelltown. This grant, from funds approved by voters in Proposition 84, fills the final funding gap for this project.

“This is great news for the Southcrest and Shelltown communities,” said Councilmember Marti Emerald. “This part of our city has been lacking safe and usable park space for too long, and the Southcrest Trails Park is an important step forward in our effort to increase the amount of green space available to our residents.”

The Southcrest Trails Park will provide an additional 2.3 acres of park space for the Southcrest and Shelltown communities. It will link these neighborhoods to regional bicycle facilities and the Dorothy Petway Park along a revitalized Chollas Creek open space system. Features include two acres of drought tolerant native and riparian trees and plants, an exercise trail, picnic areas, an amphitheater, drinking fountains, a basketball half court, a skatepark and gazebos.

In 2006, California voters passed Proposition 84, the Safe Drinking Water, Water Quality and Supply, Flood Control, River and Coastal Protection Bond Act, which authorized the Legislature to appropriate funds to support urban greening projects and sustainable community planning.

Civic San Diego was one of 40 successful applicants across the state to receive funds from the third and final round of Proposition 84 funding awarded by the SGC. These urban greening grants awarded to cities, counties, regional and local agencies, and nonprofit partners across the state are intended to help create more sustainable communities across California.

“Not only do these grants result in plans and projects that make our communities more vibrant, but collectively these investments get us closer to meeting air quality and water conservation goals that are especially significant during this drought,” said Secretary for Natural Resources and SGC Member John Laird.

In addition to the urban greening grant, Civic San Diego will provide Successor Agency committed infrastructure bond funds for construction and materials for the project. Additional excess bond funds that were intended for Southcrest infrastructure improvements can be allocated to the Southcrest Trails Park project with approval from the Department of Finance.

Now that funding has been secured, the project is ready to move forward. Civic San Diego will coordinate the completion of construction documents, advertise for a qualified contractor, and then oversee construction of the park.

“Southcrest Trails Park can serve as a regional and national model and award winning example of what green infrastructure can be,” said Cynthia Morgan, Civic San Diego Board Chair. “We look forward to continuing to work with the community to make this project a reality.”

Construction is anticipated to begin in 2015, with the park opening to the public in 2016.
