CivicSD Improves Pedestrian Routes in City Heights

November 9, 2017

SAN DIEGO, CA— Pedestrians in City Heights now have safer walking routes thanks to several street improvements completed by Civic San Diego (CivicSD).

Over the past year, CivicSD improved walkability by installing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, wheelchair ramps and 132 streetlights along some of the most heavily traveled routes throughout the area bordered by Euclid Avenue to the west, 54th Street to the east, El Cajon Boulevard to the north and University Avenue to the south—commonly known as the Colina Del Sol neighborhood.

“These much-needed upgrades are especially significant in City Heights because many residents rely on walking as a primary means to get around,” said CivicSD President Reese A. Jarrett. “This is one of the many ways we’re committed to improving the quality of life in our city’s underserved communities.”

The public is invited to celebrate these upgrades with a Grand Opening and Lighting Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 17, from 4:30 to 5 p.m. at the corner of Trojan Avenue and Altadena Avenue. The free event will include remarks from several stakeholders, including San Diego Councilmember Georgette Gómez, CivicSD President Reese A. Jarrett, City Heights Area Planning Committee members, and a City Heights resident.

Specific improvements include:

City Heights/Colina Del Sol Neighborhood Sidewalk Projects:

  • 50th Street, 51st Street, 52nd Place, 52nd Street, 53rd Street and Meade Avenue, Oakcrest Drive, Polk Avenue and Altadena Avenue

City Heights/Colina Del Sol Neighborhood Street Lighting Projects:

  • 132 Streetlights throughout the Colina Del Sol Neighborhood

City Heights/East Euclid Avenue Pedestrian Improvement Project:

  • East Euclid Avenue (from Dwight Street to Isla Vista Drive)

The work generated nearly 30 construction jobs and was funded by bond proceeds.
